Aimee Mann Live at Tarrytown Music Hall

June 24th | 8 PM

Aimee Mann | Tarrytown Music Hall | 8 PM

Aimee Mann’s Mental Illness, her first album in five years, will be released on March 31 via her own SuperEgo Records. The record follows 2012’s Charmer, which Rolling Stone proclaimed “shows off the more pop-oriented side to her usual acoustic tendencies.” With this follow-up, she returns to a more musically soft-spoken but still lyrically barbed approach, as heard in the album’s lead single, “Goose Snow Cone” . Listen/share the track here: aimeemann.com.

Special Guest: Jonathan Coulton

Special Guest: Jonathan Coulton

Mental Illness shows off Mann’s rich, incisive and wry melancholia in an almost all-acoustic format, with a “finger-picky” style inspired by some of her favorite ‘60s and ‘70s folk-rock records, augmented by haunting strings arranged by her longtime producer, Paul Bryan. Additional players include Jonathan Coulton on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bellerose on drums, Jamie Edwards on piano, John Roderick as a co-writer and Ted Leo (who recently joined her in a joint side project, The Both) as a background singer.

On this eleven-track album, the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning singer remains a student of human behavior, drawing not just on her own experiences to form the characters in the songs but tales told by friends. “I assume the brief on me is that people think that I write these really depressing songs,” Mann says. “I don’t know—people may have a different viewpoint—but that’s my own interpretation of the cliché about me. So if they thought that my songs were very down-tempo, very depressing, very sad, and very acoustic, I thought I’d just give myself permission to write the saddest, slowest, most acoustic, if-they’re-all-waltzes-so-be-it record I could…I mean, calling it Mental Illness makes me laugh, because it is true, but it’s so blunt that it’s funny.”

After several albums with Til Tuesday, Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of her record label, SuperEgo Records. In addition to her solo albums, she has appeared on many film soundtracks, most notably the song score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, with “Save Me” landing her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song.

In 2014, Mann joined up with Ted Leo for a more rock-oriented duo project, releasing a self-titled album under the name The Both. Other extracurricular activities since Charmer ranged from playing herself on the hit TV series Portlandia to performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House. Named one of The Huffington Post’s “13 Funny Musicians You Should Be Following On Twitter,” Mann has gained a diehard social media following for her quick wit and stinging observation.

Joan Osborn Sings the Songs of Bob Dylan at Landmark on Main Street | June 23

Joan Osborne has rightfully earned a reputation as one of the great voices of her generation — both a commanding, passionate performer and a frank, emotionally evocative songwriter. A multi-platinum selling recording artist and seven-time Grammy nominee, the soulful vocalist is a highly sought-after collaborator and guest performer who has performed alongside many notable artists, including Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Luciano Pavarotti, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, and Mavis Staples, to name a few.

Counting such legendary artists as Etta James and Ray Charles as influences, Osborne has released several acclaimed albums and continues to tour extensively in various configurations -- with her own band, as Joan Osborne's Soul Revue, and as an acoustic duo and trio. In 2003, Osborne joined forces with the surviving members of The Grateful Dead when they regrouped to tour as The Dead. In addition to her own solo shows and frequent guest appearances, Osborne currently also tours as a member of the rock/soul super group Trigger Hippy, founded by Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and built from each musician’s shared love of R&B and soul. The band’s self- titled debut album arrived in 2014.

Osborne has showcased her far-ranging talent during three residencies in 2016 at the Cotton Club in Tokyo, Japan; the Blue Note in Honolulu, Hawaii; and Cafe Carlyle at The Carlyle Hotel in New York City. The latter, titled Joan Osborne Sings The Songs of Bob Dylan, received critical acclaim from outlets such as The New York Times ("At every point in the evening, you had a sense of Ms. Osborne as an artist who knew exactly what she was doing") and the Huffington Post ("Her set was magic...the evening was a rediscovery of familiar Dylan, re- mined for new riches...hearing Osborne singing and dancing the Dylan greats was further testament to their versatility, beauty, and his genius"). Osborne felt this would be a great chance to work out an idea she had of doing a "Songbook Series" of albums -- the way Ella Fitzgerald did in recording the songs of Gershwin, Cole Porter, and others -- but with the songs of more recent writers. Dylan was an obvious choice.

Osborne is widely known for her live performances in the GRAMMY Award- winning documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown. She has produced two albums for Americana stalwarts the Holmes Brothers, and co-produced her last two critically acclaimed solo records, Love And Hate, and Bring It On Home, with talented producer/multi-instrumentalist Jack Petruzzelli. Bring It On Home, which found Osborne tackling vintage songs by Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Al Green, Ike and Tina Turner, and Sonny Boy Williamson, among others, and treating them with respect while giving them some interesting twists in tempo, key and feeling, garnered a Best Blues Album nomination at the 2013 GRAMMY Awards.

Osborne continues to enjoy a long and storied career that was jump-started with the great success of her major-label debut album, Relish, which wove together strands of American roots music, poetic lyrics and impassioned vocals, and produced the massive MTV and international radio smash, "One of Us.” The song occupied the number one spot on the U.S. singles chart for two weeks, Relish eventually racked up sales of over three million copies, and Osborne found a large and appreciative audience, particularly during touring as part of Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair tour.

Although the Kentucky native grew up with a passion for music, when she arrived in New York City in the late 1980s, it was to attend New York University's prestigious film school. But she couldn't resist the pull of the city's live music scene for long, and soon she was performing her own songs in downtown rock clubs and emerging as a popular presence in a vibrant scene of rootsy new acts that included such then-unknowns as Jeff Buckley, Chris Whitley, Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors. In 1992, Osborne launched her own indie label, Womanly Hips, and released the live Soul Show: Live at Delta 88 and the studio EP Blue Million Miles. Becoming a regional success led her to the signing of a major label deal and the success of Relish. But Osborne quickly made it clear that she was more interested in musical integrity and creative longevity than transient pop success, and she made that point repeatedly with such subsequent albums as 2000's Righteous Love, 2002's How Sweet It Is, 2005’s Christmas Means Love,

"I'm getting better at what I do," Osborne observes. "I can look at the songs on Love and Hate and realize that it's better than I could have done 15 or 20 years ago. I have an audience that I've built up over time, and I feel like they're with me. And because of that, I don't feel any pressure to fit myself into anyone else's idea of what I should be doing. So I feel like I can write my own rules at this point. That can be scary, but it's also liberating, and it's an exciting place to be."

Replicating the music of The Band is a tall order. But interpreting the music of The Band is an art. Songs that have reverberated across history for decades continue to speak to millions of us. The Weight remains a vehicle through which we can continue to share those stories and dance to those back beats. Come and take a load off.

The group features Jim Weider from The Band, Brian Mitchell of the Levon Helm Band, Marty Grebb, who wrote for The Band and worked with Rick Danko and Richard Manuel, and Albert Rogers from the Jim Weider Band and frequent performer at The Barn’s Midnight Rambles. Michael Bram, the newest member of The Weight, played with Jason Mraz. See The Weight Band perform timeless hits such as “The Weight,” “Up On Cripple Creek,” “Ophelia,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Rag Mama Rag,” and so many others. Hear the most authentic presentation of The Band’s music performed on stage, and see why the Chicago Sun Times proclaimed “The Weight carries on where The Band left off.”

Jim Weider (Vocals/Guitar)
Thirty years ago, Jim replaced Robbie Robertson as lead guitarist, singer and songwriter for The Band. Featured on Jericho, Jubilation, and High On The Hog albums, Jim toured with the group right up until the end and appeared in numerous Band performance videos and documentary segments.

Michael Bram (Drums/Vocals)
Soulful singer and multi-instrumentalist, Michael “Leroy” Bram most recently toured with Jason Mraz for seven years, and before that was a staple in the New York music scene.  Career highlights include working with Willie Nelson, and recording tracks with Bob Margolin of The Last Waltz fame.  Michael’s connection to The Band comes by way of the extended community who played at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY where for many years he drummed in the Chris O’Leary Band, an offshoot of players from Levon’s band, The Barnburners.

Brian Mitchell (Vocals/Piano/B3/Accordion/Harmonica)
As a member of The Levon Helm Band, Brian played piano, organ and accordion as well as contributing to vocals. He now fills those same roles within The Weight. Highly regarded within the music industry as the consummate musician, Brian has performed with Bob Dylan, Al Green, BB King and countless others.

Marty Grebb (Vocals/B3/Piano/Accordion/Saxophone)
A talented multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, Marty’s connection to The Band runs deep. He wrote and recorded on Jericho and performing on Jericho and Jubilation albums, as well as having worked on Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson projects. Like the other members of The Weight, Marty has toured with many great artists, including Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Etta James, just to name a few.

Albert Rogers (Vocals/Bass)
Albert plays bass and shares vocal duties as a member of The Weight. A long-time collaborator with Jim Weider, Albert has played with Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of The Band, as well as Albert Lee, Jim Quick, and Grayson Hugh.

The Second City opened its doors on a snowy Chicago night in December of 1959, and has since grown to become the world’s premier comedy club, theatre and school of improvisation—with live shows every night in Chicago, Toronto and Hollywood. Bernard Sahlins, Howard Alk and Paul Sills, son of teacher Viola Spolin, founded the theater as a place where scenes and story were created improvisationally, using techniques that grew out of the innovative techniques Spolin developed and taught. The Second City chose its self-mocking name from the title of an article about Chicago by A. J. Liebling that appeared in The New Yorker in 1952.

Andrew Alexander has helmed the Second City for 42 years and has produced television programs in both the United States and Canada including “SCTV,” “Second City Presents” and “Next Comedy Legend.” Since its debut, The Second City has been a launching pad for comedians, actors, directors and others working in show business. With “Stormy Love,” Storm Large and her gutsy band Le Bonheur make a triumphant return to the SOPAC stage. Known for her passionate vocal interpretations and her sizzling stage presence, you will be “taken by Storm” as you experience this sublime and unique performer. Storm Large and her band released Le Bonheur in 2014, a record that captures their inspiring and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. It is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs; beautiful, familiar, yet twisted…much like the lady herself.

Storm Large cartwheeled out of the gutter of her checkered past across a thousand punk rock stages and into her infamously googled stint on the CDS Rock n’ Roll reality series Rock Star: Supernova. From there she went on to tour the world, singing in 17 different languages, and only behaving herself somewhat, as vocalist for the joyful little pop orchestra Pink Martini.

This route lead to Storm Large to Carnegie Hall singing Kurt Weill with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed at the Gilmore Festival with pianist Kirill Gerstein, at the Ojai Festival with The Knights and at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. She has appeared with The New York Pops Orchestra, The Cincinnati Symphony, The Houston Symphony, Ireland’s RTE Concert Orchestra in Dublin and with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. among many other ensembles.

Storm Large is not only a musician but also an actor, playwright, and author. Her award-winning one-woman show, Crazy Enough, broke every box office record at Portland Center Stage in 2010. In 2012, she detailed her wild life in a memoir of the same title released through Simon and Schuster. The book was named Oprah’s Book of the Week and awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for creative non-fiction. She is currently co-writing a new musical for The Public Theater in New York City and continues to tour with Pink Martini.

The incredible harmonies and distinctive arrangements of The Jayhawks set them apart from the rest of the Minneapolis music scene that emerged in the 1980s. By the early 90’s they became a driving force and inspiration behind the growing Americana movement. Combining the talents of singer-songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson, The Jayhawks released their major label debut, the acclaimed Hollywood Town Hall (1992) on the Def American label. This was followed by Tomorrow the Green Grass (1995), which produced the alternative radio hit single “Blue.”When Olson left to pursue a solo career, Louris singularly took over the songwriting role in The Jayhawks creating the band’s enduring sound on some of their best selling and well-received albums including Smile (2000) and Rainy Day Music (2003). Louris continues to write and tour with the longtime core group of Marc Perlman, Karen Grotberg, and Tim O’Reagan. While the touring line-up has changed over the years and Olson briefly reappeared in 2010 to record and tour, this classic lineup maintains a commitment to adventure and forward motion in their shows and in their recordings. Their latest album, Paging Mr. Proust (2016), was produced in Portland with Peter Buck and Tucker Martine.
