Badass & Beautiful

After four decades of featured background singing with icons like Luther VandrossThe Rolling StonesChaka KhanTina Turner, and Nine Inch NailsMS. LISA FISCHER set out to take center stage with her own humble, heartfelt song. The 2013 Best Documentary Oscar winning film "Twenty Feet from Stardom" altered the course of Lisa's musical journey, telling her story, with clips of her legendary duets with Sting or with Mick Jagger on "Gimme Shelter", left audiences eager to see and hear more, so Lisa took the chance to set out on her own reinventing classic songs with her co-conspirators JC Maillard and Grand Baton. Their organic fusion of Caribbean psychedelic soul and jazzy progressive rock ignited Lisa's flexibility and freedom of expression, awakening her lifelong desire to make music that heals but still rocks the house.

While Lisa's range is legendary, her greatest gift is the ability to connect, to reach the hearts of her listeners. Raised in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, she emerged from New York's fervent studio scene in the early 1980s, sang for two decades with legendary vocalist Luther Vandross, and released "So Intense", earning her first Best R&B Performance Grammy with "How Can I Ease The Pain". She joined the Rolling Stones for their 1989 Steel Wheels tour, and continued to grace their stage for the next 26 years. Lisa's passion for constant growth and experimentation with different styles invited recent collaborations with jazz pianist Taylor EigstiStingBruce SpringsteenMichael McDonaldEric KrasnoTalib KweliBilly Childs and YoYo Mathe BBC Proms / Jules Buckley and the Metropole OrkestAlonzo King LINES BalletAnna Deavere Smith's "Notes from the Field" for HBO, and especially her full evening program The Classic Lisa Fischer with Grand Baton and Seattle SymphonyCincinnati Symphony and the National Philharmonic. With spiritual truth-telling as her compass and loving kindness as her guide, MS. LISA FISCHER continues her creative journey; destination unknown.

"Lisa Fischer in concert is addictive. Every performance is so enriching, so exciting, so transcendent that you want more. With remarkable vocal range and vocabulary, Fischer can sing soul, jazz, rock, gospel, pop, folk and classical with equal facility and authority. She often mixes styles in the same song, sometimes in the same vocal line. Her approach tends to be intimate, artful and almost meditative, accompanied by her interpretive dancing, but she also can cut loose and funk with fierceness and rock with abandon." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Molly Tuttle Music Without Borders

'…a sort of high-wattage Alison Krauss-Taylor Swift hybrid — Tuttle effortlessly delivers a mélange of styles to accompany her powerful guitar licks throughout.' – Rolling Stone

A virtuosic, award-winning guitarist with a gift for insightful songwriting, Molly Tuttle evolves her signature sound with boundary-breaking songs on her compelling debut album, When You’re Ready. Already crowned 'Instrumentalist of the Year' at the 2018 Americana Music Awards on the strength of her EP, Tuttle has broken boundaries and garnered the respect of her peers, winning fans for her incredible flatpicking guitar technique and confessional songwriting. Graced with a clear, true voice and a keen melodic sense, the 26-year-old seems poised for a long and exciting career. When You’re Ready, produced by Ryan Hewitt (The Avett Brothers, The Lumineers) showcases her astonishing range and versatility and shows that she is more than simply an Americana artist.

Since moving to Nashville in 2015, the native Californian has been welcomed into folk music, bluegrass, Americana, and traditional country communities – even as When You’re Ready stretches the boundaries of those genres. Over the past year, Molly has continued to accumulate accolades, winning Folk Alliance International’s honor for Song of the Year for “You Didn’t Call My Name” and taking home her second trophy for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Guitar Player of the Year (the first woman in the history of the IBMA to win that honor).

'I love so many types of music,' she says 'and it’s exciting to be a part of and embraced by different musical worlds, but when I’m creating I don’t think about genres or how it will fit into any particular format – it’s just music.'

Hailed as the new Janis Joplin even before she played the legendary rock icon in the off-Broadway musical Love, Janis, Dana Fuchs is a raspy-voiced, blues-rock-soul singer-songwriter whose versatile career has embraced music, theater and film. She starred on the big screen as ‘Sadie’ in Julie Taymor’s Beatles-based musical, Across the Universe, putting her undeniable lead vocal stamp on 'Helter Skelter,' 'Don’t Let Me Down' and 'Why Don’t We Do It in the Road.' Dana made a brief cameo in the ensemble piece New York, I Love You, had a starring role opposite Method Man in The Mortician and wrote and performed on the soundtrack to the Maggie Gyllenhaal movie, Sherrybaby. Dana has ignited performance stages all over the world with her burnt-honey vocals and bruisingly honest songwriting.

Her eponymous band’s studio catalog continues to grow steadily in acclaim, with 2011’s Love To Beg toasted as Classic Rock’s 'Blues Album of the Month,' 2013’s Bliss Avenue dubbed, 'blisteringly good' by the UK’s Bluesdoodles, and 2015’s acoustic album Broken Down of which AXS says, 'Her spectacular voice holds up through all the intimate spaces of a bloodshot moon and the roadside exits of lost loves.' Of her most recent release, Love Lives OnBlues Matters declares, 'Out of darkness comes light and a reborn Dana Fuchs, armed with the album of her life.'

Jake Shimabukuro Music Without Borders

“Mr. Shimabukuro, who hails from Hawaii — where his chosen instrument is neither a conversation piece nor a punch line — comes by his fame with buoyant musicianship and brisk proficiency.” The New York Times

If you think you’ve heard what a ukulele can do, think again. Over the past 15 years, Jake Shimabukuro has challenged and changed all notions of what was possible with a ukulele. Often referred to as the Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Lee and Michael Jordan of his craft, Jake takes the ukulele where no one has taken it before creating awe inspiring music that ranges from jazz, blues and rock to bluegrass, classical and folk. Performing around the world with an out-of-the-box blend of stunning virtuosity and deep musicality, Jake is an adventurer on a mission to connect and inspire. Whether one-on-one or in front of thousands, Jake shares a deep emotional connection with the listener that is open, magical and transcendent.

The innovation in his style is a combination of rhythmic strumming, classical-style finger-picking and fretboard tapping,” notes The New York Times. “Most people just strum the ukulele, but I started playing melodies, and a new world opened up,” says Shimabukuro, “I got it to sing.” Shimabukuro first came to the world’s attention with his deeply beautiful and original take on George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in a viral video that dominated YouTube in 2005.” As soon as music fans got a listen to Shimabukuro’s virtuosic approach to the ukulele, they were hooked. Shimabukuro albums Gently Weeps, Peace Love Ukulele and Grand Ukulele topped the Billboard World Music Charts, and he soon became one of the hottest tickets around, headlining the Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center and the Sydney Opera House (he even performed for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II), while making frequent appearances on media outlets like “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

On his latest album, Trio, the acclaimed musician begins a bold and exciting new chapter in his already remarkable career.Guiding the process was producer R.S. Field (Steve Earle, Webb Wilder), whose relationship with Shimabukuro began with 2016’s Nashville Sessions and continued with 2018’s The Greatest Day. Recorded with bassist Nolan Verner and guitarist Dave Preston, with many of the songs composed spontaneously in the studio, Trio achieves the sonic alchemy the three musicians achieve on stage. “This record really captures our collective spirit, and I can’t wait to get out there and play these songs live.”

Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi

Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi Music Without Borders

The music of Jimi Hendrix

World-renowned guitarist Stanley Jordan has developed a new live show called “Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi.” This is a tribute show, but it’s not pure imitation. Instead Stanley builds on Jimi’s legacy in a myriad of creative way. As Stanley explains it, “This is my fantasy Jimi Hendrix concert if Jimi were still alive and playing today. By re-imagining his music and channeling his persona I try to bring that fantasy to life.”

It may be surprising that a rock legend like Hendrix would get so much love from a jazz legend like Jordan. Stanley’s 1985 album Magic Touch was #1 on Billboard’s jazz chart for 51 weeks, and Stanley has shared the stage or recorded with jazz artists such as Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Billy Cobham. But again, hearing it from Stanley, “I actually played rock and blues before I played jazz. In fact, Jimi’s constant searching for new sounds inspired me to move toward jazz in the first place.”

It may also be surprising that Stanley Jordan would take on a project like this. After all, Stanley is a well-known guitarist with a signature style, has four Grammy nominations, a cameo in a Blake Edwards film (Blind Date), and a host of TV appearances over a long career including “Jimmy Fallon,” “David Letterman,” “Jay Leno” and “Johnny Carson” to name a few. Stanley explains he took on a project like this because, “I feel a strong connection to Jimi Hendrix because he was the first guitarist I emulated as a child. Out of love for Jimi and his music I feel a strong desire to try to keep his legacy alive.”

In recent years, Stanley has performed with many artists in the rock and jam band worlds, including the Dave Matthews Band, Umphrey’s McGee, Moe. and more. Stanley says, “Returning to my rock roots has been an absolute joy artistically, and with this project I’m taking that to a new level.”

Marc Cohn

Marc Cohn Music Without Borders

Marc is one of the most soulful, talented artists I know. I love his songs, he's an incredible singer, and I marvel at his ability to mesmerize every audience he plays for. - Bonnie Raitt

After winning a GRAMMY for his soulful ballad 'Walking in Memphis,' Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer-songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. Rooted in the rich ground of American rhythm and blues, soul and gospel and possessed of a deft storyteller’s pen, he weaves vivid, detailed, often drawn-from-life tales that evoke some of our most universal human feelings: love, hope, faith, joy and heartbreak.

Cohn followed up his platinum-selling 1991 debut album, with two more releases in the 1990s. As his reputation as an artist and performer continued to grow, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, David Crosby, Graham Nash and Patty Griffin all made guest appearances on Cohn’s early records for Atlantic.

In 2007, Cohn recorded his most moving and critically-acclaimed record to date, Join the Parade, inspired by the horrific events following Hurricane Katrina and his own near-fatal shooting just weeks before. Cohn then released Listening Booth: 1970, a collection of reimagined classics, “The Coldest Corner in the World” (2014), the title song to the documentary Tree Man, as well as Careful What You Dream: Lost Songs and Rarities, along with the bonus album Evolution of a Record (2016).

In 2017, Cohn went on the road with the legendary Michael McDonald, garnering critical acclaim across the U.S. As a songwriter, he also worked with a roster of American music greats. Cohn co-wrote a solid half of the celebrated album This is Where I Live, by soul survivor William Bell, who with Cohn’s help won his first GRAMMY at age 78. Marc revisited another corner of American music’s rich heritage with the Blind Boys of Alabama on the GRAMMY-nominated song 'Let My Mother Live,' and also worked with David Crosby on the album Lighthouse.

Moving forward, he continues to do what he does best: infuse American music with both a fresh perspective and a reverence for its deep roots.

Opening Act: Mark Erelli

Bearing witness to small details and fleeting moments is what dignifies our everyday stories, rendering the mundane profound. This principle has governed Erelli’s approach to his two decade career, including 11 solo albums, stints accompanying Josh Ritter, Paula Cole and Anais Mitchell, and a pair of records he produced for GRAMMY-winning songwriter Lori McKenna. Ever since Billboard magazine heralded the “simple, atmospheric grace” of his Signature Sounds debut, Erelli’s belief in the sacredness of an examined life has driven him between the ostensible extremes of lullabies and murder ballads, western swing and protest anthems. Whether he’s holding a pen or a Telecaster, Erelli’s music welcomes even the casual listener, but those who choose to dig more deeply are richly rewarded. Perhaps that is what Folk Alley hears in Erelli’s songs, when it encourages people to “listen close; there's sure to be something in there to break your heart a split second before it leads you straight to grace.”

Amy Helm

Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 8:00 PM at the Emelin Theatre

Amy Helm Music Without Borders

The daughter of The Band’s legendary drummer and singer Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus, Amy Helm began her musical career as a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and later served as a backing musician in her father's Midnight Ramble Band.

Her second album This Too Shall Light (2018), comprises a diverse range of influences including Americana, country, blues, and gospel, and the kinds of four-part harmonies that can burst open a melody and close the loop of an octave. Amy sought what she calls a “circular sound” for the album, which serves as a comprehensive portrait covering her life's journeys and recoveries; they’re the stories that, no matter where they take her, seem to end and begin in the same place like a circle.

Although a profound songwriter herself, Helm and Henry jointly arranged powerful new versions of songs including Rod Stewart’s “Mandolin Wind,” Allen Toussaint’s “Freedom for the Stallion,” and the Milk Carton Kids’ “Michigan.” The title track in particular, written by Hiss Golden Messenger’s MC Taylor and Josh Kaufman (Josh Ritter, Bob Weir, Craig Finn), is a brilliant summation of the record’s sound and spirit — a positive and proactive manipulation of the old adage that “This too shall pass.”
