Red Molly

Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 8PM at Emelin Theatre

red molly mwb music without borders

Red Molly combines the forces of three songwriters with unique character and style, creating a show that is larger than the sum of its parts. Known for their 3-part harmony, their songs and arrangements lay bare a love of vocal blend. The band weaves together threads of American music—from country & blues to folk & bluegrass. Their innovative instrumentation is suited for roots-rock and heartful ballads alike, and the alchemy of their personalities onstage draws even back row listeners into a sense of intimacy. Red Molly is simply a joy to experience.

Singing spine-tingling high notes, Abbie Gardner is a dobro player and improviser from a musical family. A consummate performer, her songs and performance have the punch of rhythm and blues. Playing guitar and tambourine, Laurie MacAllister draws inspiration from classic folk and singer-songwriters. Her voice stretches octaves, warm and romantic one moment, playful and subversive the next. Molly Venter has a smoky voice that is unforgettable, and a moody approach to song-smithing. Quirky and fashion-forward, she moves in step to the music while playing guitar and tambourine.

Formed in 2004, Red Molly has inspired countless female trios and has since reinvented themselves as a high-octane five-piece band in 2017. They remain a dominant force on the Americana/Folk scene due in part to their laughter and spontaneity onstage. Upright bassist Craig Akin and percussionist and electric guitarist Eben Pariser fill out the sound, giving the show a broad range of musical options—from complex and hard-hitting to sparse and delicate.

Accolades:

“A blend of serious harmonizing chops and slick pop savvy” – Time Out NY

“[Red Molly has] cut a niche as sunnyside Americana … immaculate vocal harmonies.” –The Guardian

“From Day One, Red Molly conjured musical magic. A decade later, they’ve honed their songwriting, their covers, their playing and, above all, their harmonies into something joyful and sublime.”– John Platt, WFUV FM, Sunday Breakfast

“Femme Phenom! No root from the grand tree of music is left untouched – classic country heartbreak, undeniable swing, authentic folk, gospel rock with an edge, and Americana stomp. With smart production, a strong thread runs throughout the album and every note sung is upheld on cosmic harmony. Red Molly is unstoppable. Highly recommended.”– Mary Sue Twohy, SiriusXM Satellite Radio

The Indigo Girls MWB Music Without Borders

Twenty years after they began releasing records as the Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have politely declined the opportunity to slow down with age. With a legacy of releases and countless U.S. and international tours behind them, the Indigo Girls have forged their own way in the music business. Selling over 14 million records, they are still going strong. Amy & Emily are the only duo with top 40 titles on the Billboard 200 in the '80s, '90s, '00s and '10s.

The power of unity, both in music and in life, has been an Indigo Girls calling card ever since they burst into the spotlight with their 1989 self-titled breakout album. Since then, the band has racked up a slew of Gold and Platinum records, taken home a coveted GRAMMY Award, and earned the respect of high profile peers and collaborated from Michael Stipe to Joan Baez. NPR’s Mountain Stage called the group “one of the finest folk duos of all time” while Rolling Stone said “they personify what happens when two distinct sensibilities, voices, and worldviews come together to create something transcendentally its own.”   The duo has balanced their long, successful musical career by supporting numerous social causes – the Indigo Girls don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk. Both on and off the stage, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have secured their spot as one of the most legendary musical acts of this generation.

James Maddock MWB Music Without Borders

James Maddock has built his acclaimed legacy on conveying his songs and sentiments in the most direct possible way. In his latest album, The Green, he’s recorded the most eclectic, exhilaratingly soulful, and imaginatively produced album in his career. “This is my best album. It’s an upbeat record with really strong songs and a lot of surprises,” the British transplant reveals.

Since 1999, James Maddock’s boldly vulnerable songwriting, honeyed rasp, and distinct Folk and Americana aesthetic have garnered acclaim from icons, peers, and taste-making outlets like NPR, American SongwriterRelix magazine, and CMT EdgeRelix notes, “James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in, craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately, he doesn’t need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery.”

His consistency as a recording artist and a captivating live performer have attracted a devoted fanbase He’s performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows), appeared on an album with Susan McKeown, and built a respected international profile through tireless touring from the Northeast U.S. to Europe to Australia.

Previous to his solo career, James Maddock was the front man for the Columbia Records band Wood where he was first introduced to a mainstream audience. The group’s debut album, Songs From Stamford Hill, was prominently featured in the hit television series Dawson’s Creek. In 2003, James Maddock relocated from England to New York, and, soon after, launched his solo career. His 2009 solo album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for “Best Americana Album,” while its follow-up, Wake Up And Dream, ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV’s (NYC) Listener Poll.

The Green truly captures NPR’s accolade that “his timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy.”

James Maddock is taking selections from The Green, as well as fan favorites from his back catalog, on the road. “I love how songs reveal themselves differently in the live setting,” James says. “I’m grateful I have such a large body of work and an audience to share a creative dialogue with. It’s all a luxury and just a really beautiful thing—I feel very lucky.”

While on tour with Zappa Plays Zappa Dweezil will be previewing some of the guitar concepts he teaches at camp in a special event prior to each concert. "I transformed my guitar technique before starting Zappa Plays Zappa out of necessity to play my dad's most sophisticated and challenging melodies. WFUV's John Platt returns with the 2018 Landmark On Your Radar. As always, John's musical finds are talented and eclectic performers you'll want to add to your playlist.

From Carnegie Hall to the Nomad Women's Festival in the Sahara Desert, Morley has brought her unique blend of jazz, folk, and soul to the world's stage. Be it solo with her acoustic guitar or with a full band, her message is consistent and clear; love, justice, and inspiration.

Awarded as Songwriter of the Year from ASCAP and heralded as Emerging Artist of the Year by the New York Times, Morley has penned songs for TED Women, Acumen, V-Day, Think Global School and GOAL - South Africa. Morley was the voice for Ralph Lauren's fragrance commercial "Romance". Her music has been placed on several major network television shows as well as human rights documentaries.

Mike + Ruthy (Mike Merenda & Ruthy Ungar) are hard touring folk musicians from New York's Hudson Valley. It doesn't just mean that they play square dances on old, dusty instruments (which they do), it means they write about the times we live in using sturdy roots music as their bedrock. Buckle a couple kids in the backseat (check!) and you've got something that looks a lot like the American bohemian dream.

They host their own festival (homeofthehoot.com), have postcards of encouragement from none other than the late Pete Seeger, and miles upon miles of touring under their belts supporting one of the best catalogs of original music being performed today. Their performances alternate between whisper-soft intimacy and rafter-raising hoedowns.

Their latest record, Bright As You Can, is being hailed as one of the top Americana releases of the year ("One of the year's standout Americana records" - Boston Globe) and their touring schedule reads like a who's who of today's scene ("In the vanguard of today's vibrant folk revival"- PopMatters) including appearances with Ani DiFranco, Avett Brothers, Watkins Family Hour and The B-52s.

Bluebirds of Paradise give the ever-popular guy/girl duet band a new and unique twist. Singer/songwriters Ari Hest and Chrissi Poland created this scintillating duo, an infusion of jazz, indie-folk, and pop steeped in Brazilian overtones. With enchanting vocals and romantic yet often comedic lyrical sentiments, this powerful pair draws you in quickly and leaves you wanting more.

Chrissi and Ari created Bluebirds by accident, they say. "We weren't planning on starting a band together," comments Chrissi. "Ari had a show that he asked me to open for, and it was during the holidays. We thought it would be fun to write a holiday song in a Brazilian, Jobim-inspired way. We both are big lovers of Brazilian jazz songs and melodies.

Their latest EP, In A Night, features producer Will Lee on bass, Doug Yowell on drums, Chrissi on piano, keys and vocals, and Ari on guitars and vocals. The 6 song EP was recorded at the famous Carriage House
Studios in beautiful Stamford, CT.

David Bromberg Quintet | SOPAC | May 11th | 7:30 PM

"There's only two kinds of music - 'the Star Spangled Banner' and the blues." - Willie Nelson, quoting renowned fiddler Johnny Gimble

For Americana godfather David Bromberg, it all began with the Blues.

His incredible journey spans five-and-a-half decades, and includes - but is not limited to - adventures with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, and music and life lessons from seminal blues guitarist Reverend Gary Davis, who claimed the young Bromberg as a son. A musician's musician, Bromberg's mastery of several stringed instruments (guitar, fiddle, Dobro, mandolin), and multiple styles is legendary, leading Dr. John to declare him an American icon. In producing John Hartford's hugely influential Aereo-Plain LP, Bromberg even co-invented a genre: Newgrass.

Add in a period of self-imposed exile from his passion (1980-2002), during which he became a renowned violin expert, and Wilmington, Delaware's cultural ambassador; top that off with a triumphant return to music-making, and you have an amazing tale leading back to one place: the Blues.

Now, with The Blues, the Whole Blues, and Nothing But the Blues, his first release for Red House Records, Bromberg and multi-Grammy-winning producer/accompanist Larry Campbell (Dylan, Levon Helm, Paul Simon) focus on the music David discovered in high school, when, circa late 50s, he was introduced to a friend's dad's collection of Blues 78s. He'd only just taken up guitar as a means to pass the time while in bed with the measles.

"I loved those 78s so much," says David, "I taped them on a portable reel-to-reel, so I could listen at home and learn."

That love is evident in The Blues, the Whole Blues and Nothing But the Blues. The album is both Blues primer and an opportunity to witness a master embracing this distinctly American music with passion and grace.

Suzanne Vega performing Solitude Standing & 99.9F In Full

Legendary New York singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega celebrates the 30th and 25th anniversaries respectively of her albums Solitude Standing and 99.9F by performing both in full, as well as more tracks from throughout a distinguished career that has seen her sell over 7 million albums worldwide.

Vega will perform tracks such as 'Luka', 'Tom's Diner', and 'Blood Makes Noise' from Solitude Standing and 99.9F.

Having emerged as a leading figure in the folk-music revival of the early 1980s accompanying herself simply with an acoustic guitar, Vega released Solitude Standing, her second album, in 1987. The record would go platinum and earn a nomination for Record of the Year at the Grammys in the process.

Always pushing the boundaries of music both lyrically and sonically, Vega released 99.9F in 1992, an album with a more electronic sound, which brought descriptions of 'industrial folk' and 'techno folk'. The record was certified gold, and also won a New York Music Award for Best Rock Album.

On looking back on these two pivotal albums in her career, Suzanne Vega says:

"These songs were written and recorded many years ago, but I still love playing them live, and have ever since the albums first came out. Now to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Solitude Standing and the 25th Anniversary of 99.9F, my band and I will perform them both in their entirety for the very first time. Please join me for this very special concert!"

VIP Package includes Premium seat, VIP laminate, tour merchandise, an exclusive sound check party and with a photo with Suzanne. [Limit: 25 people].

2 Nights of The Mavericks at Tarrytown Music Hall 12/6 & 7/2017

A Music Hall favorite returns! The Mavericks are back for a two night run, supporting their new album Brand New Day.  The genre-defying Mavericks are declaring their independence and stepping out on their own with Brand New Day, the first studio album released on Mono Mundo Recordings, the label they founded in 2016. Brand New Day is the follow-up to the widely praised albums Mono (2015) and In Time (2013). Flashing the same exhilarating, beyond-category style that has defined the Mavericks, the new album introduces a collection of taut, energetic, economical songs sure to be embraced by both original fans of their top-10 albums and hit singles of the ‘90s and a new generation of listeners who have joined the party since their triumphant 2012 reunion. It is the mature and timely work of an exciting and underestimated American band that has embraced its own destiny. “This is the first studio record on our own label, and it is an important component in the band’s history,” Malo says, “but the real goal was just to make a great record.” The new collection – co-produced like its immediate predecessors by the band’s golden-voiced singer Raul Malo and Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Melissa Etheridge), who is partnered with the band in the new Mono Mundo imprint – features the core members of the group since their reformation: Malo, drummer Paul Deakin, guitarist Eddie Perez, and keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden, along with auxiliary members “the Fantastic Four” filling out the set’s brawny sound with their signature accordion and horns.

Joan Osborn Sings the Songs of Bob Dylan at Landmark on Main Street | June 23

Joan Osborne has rightfully earned a reputation as one of the great voices of her generation — both a commanding, passionate performer and a frank, emotionally evocative songwriter. A multi-platinum selling recording artist and seven-time Grammy nominee, the soulful vocalist is a highly sought-after collaborator and guest performer who has performed alongside many notable artists, including Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Luciano Pavarotti, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, and Mavis Staples, to name a few.

Counting such legendary artists as Etta James and Ray Charles as influences, Osborne has released several acclaimed albums and continues to tour extensively in various configurations -- with her own band, as Joan Osborne's Soul Revue, and as an acoustic duo and trio. In 2003, Osborne joined forces with the surviving members of The Grateful Dead when they regrouped to tour as The Dead. In addition to her own solo shows and frequent guest appearances, Osborne currently also tours as a member of the rock/soul super group Trigger Hippy, founded by Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and built from each musician’s shared love of R&B and soul. The band’s self- titled debut album arrived in 2014.

Osborne has showcased her far-ranging talent during three residencies in 2016 at the Cotton Club in Tokyo, Japan; the Blue Note in Honolulu, Hawaii; and Cafe Carlyle at The Carlyle Hotel in New York City. The latter, titled Joan Osborne Sings The Songs of Bob Dylan, received critical acclaim from outlets such as The New York Times ("At every point in the evening, you had a sense of Ms. Osborne as an artist who knew exactly what she was doing") and the Huffington Post ("Her set was magic...the evening was a rediscovery of familiar Dylan, re- mined for new riches...hearing Osborne singing and dancing the Dylan greats was further testament to their versatility, beauty, and his genius"). Osborne felt this would be a great chance to work out an idea she had of doing a "Songbook Series" of albums -- the way Ella Fitzgerald did in recording the songs of Gershwin, Cole Porter, and others -- but with the songs of more recent writers. Dylan was an obvious choice.

Osborne is widely known for her live performances in the GRAMMY Award- winning documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown. She has produced two albums for Americana stalwarts the Holmes Brothers, and co-produced her last two critically acclaimed solo records, Love And Hate, and Bring It On Home, with talented producer/multi-instrumentalist Jack Petruzzelli. Bring It On Home, which found Osborne tackling vintage songs by Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Al Green, Ike and Tina Turner, and Sonny Boy Williamson, among others, and treating them with respect while giving them some interesting twists in tempo, key and feeling, garnered a Best Blues Album nomination at the 2013 GRAMMY Awards.

Osborne continues to enjoy a long and storied career that was jump-started with the great success of her major-label debut album, Relish, which wove together strands of American roots music, poetic lyrics and impassioned vocals, and produced the massive MTV and international radio smash, "One of Us.” The song occupied the number one spot on the U.S. singles chart for two weeks, Relish eventually racked up sales of over three million copies, and Osborne found a large and appreciative audience, particularly during touring as part of Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair tour.

Although the Kentucky native grew up with a passion for music, when she arrived in New York City in the late 1980s, it was to attend New York University's prestigious film school. But she couldn't resist the pull of the city's live music scene for long, and soon she was performing her own songs in downtown rock clubs and emerging as a popular presence in a vibrant scene of rootsy new acts that included such then-unknowns as Jeff Buckley, Chris Whitley, Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors. In 1992, Osborne launched her own indie label, Womanly Hips, and released the live Soul Show: Live at Delta 88 and the studio EP Blue Million Miles. Becoming a regional success led her to the signing of a major label deal and the success of Relish. But Osborne quickly made it clear that she was more interested in musical integrity and creative longevity than transient pop success, and she made that point repeatedly with such subsequent albums as 2000's Righteous Love, 2002's How Sweet It Is, 2005’s Christmas Means Love,

"I'm getting better at what I do," Osborne observes. "I can look at the songs on Love and Hate and realize that it's better than I could have done 15 or 20 years ago. I have an audience that I've built up over time, and I feel like they're with me. And because of that, I don't feel any pressure to fit myself into anyone else's idea of what I should be doing. So I feel like I can write my own rules at this point. That can be scary, but it's also liberating, and it's an exciting place to be."

Aimee Mann’s Mental Illness, her first album in five years, will be released on March 31 via her own SuperEgo Records. The record follows 2012’s Charmer, which Rolling Stone proclaimed “shows off the more pop-oriented side to her usual acoustic tendencies.” With this follow-up, she returns to a more musically soft-spoken but still lyrically barbed approach, as heard in the album’s lead single, “Goose Snow Cone” . Mental Illness shows off Mann’s rich, incisive and wry melancholia in an almost all-acoustic format, with a “finger-picky” style inspired by some of her favorite ‘60s and ‘70s folk-rock records, augmented by haunting strings arranged by her longtime producer, Paul Bryan. Additional players include Jonathan Coulton on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bellerose on drums, Jamie Edwards on piano, John Roderick as a co-writer and Ted Leo (who recently joined her in a joint side project, The Both) as a background singer.

On this eleven-track album, the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning singer remains a student of human behavior, drawing not just on her own experiences to form the characters in the songs but tales told by friends. “I assume the brief on me is that people think that I write these really depressing songs,” Mann says. “I don’t know—people may have a different viewpoint—but that’s my own interpretation of the cliché about me. So if they thought that my songs were very down-tempo, very depressing, very sad, and very acoustic, I thought I’d just give myself permission to write the saddest, slowest, most acoustic, if-they’re-all-waltzes-so-be-it record I could…I mean, calling it Mental Illness makes me laugh, because it is true, but it’s so blunt that it’s funny.”

After several albums with Til Tuesday, Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of her record label, SuperEgo Records. In addition to her solo albums, she has appeared on many film soundtracks, most notably the song score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, with “Save Me” landing her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song.

In 2014, Mann joined up with Ted Leo for a more rock-oriented duo project, releasing a self-titled album under the name The Both. Other extracurricular activities since Charmer ranged from playing herself on the hit TV series Portlandia to performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House. Named one of The Huffington Post’s “13 Funny Musicians You Should Be Following On Twitter,” Mann has gained a diehard social media following for her quick wit and stinging observation.
