An Evening with Fran Lebowitz in conversation with host Wally Lamb

Author, journalist, actress, and raconteur Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after-shave lotion, adults who roller-skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan.

Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whose writing — pointed, taut and economical — is equally forthright, irascible, and unapologetically opinionated on stage. Named one of the year's most stylish women by Vanity Fair, Lebowitz remains a style icon.

Her first book, a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life, was a bestseller, as was a second collection, Social Studies. Lebowitz is also the author of the children’s book, Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas.

Lebowitz had a recurring role as Judge Janice Goldberg on the television drama Law & Order, and a part in the Martin Scorsese’s film, "The Wolf of Wall Street." She has long been a regular on various talk shows including those hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, and Bill Maher.

The Machine: 30 Years of Pink Floyd

Garde Arts Center, Friday, November 9, 2018 at 8:00PM

The Machine Music Without Borders

THE MACHINE, America’s top Pink Floyd show, has forged a 30-year reputation for extending the legacy of Pink Floyd, selling out theaters, premier rock clubs and casinos across North and Central America, Europe and Asia, performing at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, and Gathering of the Vibes,  and sharing the stage with full symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphonies.

The New York-based quartet performs a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire, complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems.  With stellar musicianship and passionate delivery, The Machine explores collective improvisation rivaling that of an early 1970’s Pink Floyd. Their use of expanded theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays and lighting continues in the spirit of the later Floyd of the 1980’s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an A to Z approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet.  The members of The Machine include founding members Joe Pascarell (guitar, vocals) and Tahrah Cohen (drums), and longtime bandmates Stephen Bard (bass, vocals) and Scott Chasolen (keys, vocals).

“They duplicate the sound and hits of Pink Floyd with chilling accuracy, and they play for a hell of a long time.”- Matt Diehl – Rolling Stone

“These guys are great!”- Bob Ezrin – Co-Producer, Pink Floyd’s The Wall

“The Machine look nothing like Pink Floyd, but that doesn’t matter – they sound exactly like Pink Floyd, and that’s what counts.”- Matthew Webber Spin Magazine

Los Lobos Funky Feat Music Without Borders MWB

Since 1974, East L.A.’s Los Lobos have been exploring the artistic and commercial possibilities of American biculturalism, moving back and forth between their Chicano roots and their love of American rock & roll. Although the band first gained fame as part of the early-Eighties roots-rock revival, they didn’t so much strip music down as mix it up, playing norteño, blues, country, Tex-Mex, ballads, folk, and rock. While often cited as one of the great bands of Latino Rock, Los Lobos’ eclectic sound in fact defined them as a vital example of America’s cultural melting pot.

Three original members of Little Feat Paul Barrere (guitar, vocals), Fred Tackett (guitar) and Kenny Gradney (bass) are joined by long time Feat drummer Gabe Ford for a raucous evening of all the Little Feat hits like "Dixie Chicken," "Willin'," "Down On The Farm," "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" and so much more.

Amy Ray and Emily Saliers

Twenty years after they began releasing records as the Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have politely declined the opportunity to slow down with age. With a legacy of releases and countless U.S. and international tours behind them, the Indigo Girls have forged their own way in the music business. Selling over 14 million records, they are still going strong. Amy & Emily are the only duo with top 40 titles on the Billboard 200 in the '80s, '90s, '00s, and '10s.

“Along with Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers rank at the very top of all-time great duos. The sublime music-making-machine-skewering “Making Promises” is one of their finest rockers.” – The Boston Herald

After signing to Epic Records in 1988, the Indigo Girls released their critically acclaimed eponymous album to thunderous praise; it remained on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for 35 weeks, earned double platinum status, received a Grammy nomination for “Best New Artist” and won “Best Contemporary Folk Recording.” They were overnight folk icons who continued to live up to the high standards they’d set for themselves: they’ve since released 14 albums (3 platinum and 3 gold), received six Grammy nominations and have won one. Indigo Girls have toured with innumerable star acts including Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Joan Baez, R.E.M., Sarah MacLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Jewel and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

The duo has balanced their long, successful musical career by supporting numerous social causes – the Indigo Girls don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk. Having established an intensely dedicated fan base, the duo continues to remain relevant and attract new fans. With their latest release, Beauty Queen Sister, released on IG Recordings distributed by Vanguard Records, Emily Saliers, and Amy Ray have secured their spot as one of the most legendary musical acts of this generation.

In 2015 Indigo Girls released their 14th studio album, One Lost Day, produced by Jordan Brook Hamlin and mixed by Brian Joseph.

The Sugarman Himself, Rodriguez

Rodriguez began performing in bars and clubs around the city of Detroit in the 1960s where he recorded two studio albums, Cold Fact in 1969 and Coming from Reality in 1971.  His music went unnoticed in the U.S.  – but, unknown to Rodriguez,  not in South Africa, where he had reached over decades legendary folk-rock super star status, inspiring anti-Apartheid activists and musicians alike with his counterculture lyrics

In the late 1990s, South African fans, who had believed Rodriguez had died long before, finally sought him out, leading to the unanticipated renaissance of his music career, as told in the 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, Searching for Sugarman. The film has been aired multiple times on PBS and public TV worldwide and is available on DVD and streaming TV.  International media attention, awareness and accolades have since been bestowed upon both the documentary - Searching for Sugar Man - and Rodriguez’s music.

Garde Arts Center | Sunday, Oct 15th | Michael McDonald with Marc Cohn

Distinctive and soulful, Michael McDonald’s voice is one of the most yearningly emotive instruments of our times. To this add formidable songwriting and keyboard skills, and you have an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From ‘70s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What A Fool Believes” and solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’” through two highly-acclaimed Motown covers albums and recent genre-busting guest spots with alternative buzz bands Grizzly Bear and Holy Ghost, the five-time Grammy-winning McDonald is that rare thing in contemporary pop – an artist whose work is both timeless and ever-evolving. On the heels of 2008’s acclaimed crossover album Soul Speak (which hit three different charts simultaneously) and multiple appearances on PBS’s Soundstage, McDonald continues to tour the world, from Europe to Asia to Australia.

After winning a GRAMMY for his soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis,” Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer/songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He’s a natural storyteller, balancing the exuberant with the poignant, and able to distill universal truth out of his often romantic, drawn-from-life tales. Cohn followed up his platinum-selling debut with two more releases in the 1990s, at which point TIME magazine called him "one of the honest, emotional voices we need in this decade." Last year, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of his platinum-selling debut album, Marc proudly released Careful What You Dream: Lost Songs and Rarities and the bonus album, Evolution of a Record, featuring never-before-heard songs and demos dating back to years before his debut and the Grammy Award that followed.

Garrison Keillor was born in 1942 in Anoka, Minnesota, and began his radio career as a freshman at the University of Minnesota, from which he graduated in 1966. He went to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969, and from July 6, 1974 through July 1, 2016, he created and hosted his popular variety show, A Prairie Home Companion, for some 3.5 million listeners on 700 public radio stations coast to coast and beyond. Keillor has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His many books include Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance, Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny, and The Keillor Reader (Viking). He is the host of the daily program The Writer’s Almanac and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, Good Poems: American Places (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman. He has two grandsons and in 2007, he opened an independent bookstore, Common Good Books, in St. Paul, the city where he and his wife and daughter make their home.

For more than four decades now, Robin & Linda Williams have made it their mission to perform the music that they love, "a robust blend of bluegrass, folk, old-time and acoustic country that combines wryly observant lyrics with a wide-ranging melodicism." Today some might call it "Americana," but these two revered music masters were living and breathing this elixir 20 years before that label was turned into a radio format.

As live performers they are second to none. Their stirring concerts have earned them a huge body of fans over the years. But as gifted songwriters Robin and Linda have earned an even rarer honor, the devotion and deep respect of their musical peers. As The Washington Post put it, "The Williamses are able to sum up a life in a few details with moving completeness." The list of artists who have covered their original songs include some of the greats of country music, names like Emmylou Harris, Tom T. Hall, George Hamilton IV, Tim & Mollie O'Brien, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kathy Mattea and The Seldom Scene.

Kevin Hart Works Out New Material | Garde Arts Center | June 30th | SOLD OUT

Actor and comedian Kevin Hart just announced on Tuesday, four days before his scheduled Birthday Bash at Foxwoods, that he would be holding an impromptu show at the Garde Arts Center to test new comedy material — a growing trend in the comedy world.

In February, Louis C.K. threw an impromptu comedy show in Boston that had crowds flocking en masse to the gig, and Chris Rock did the same thing at Greenwich Village’s Comedy Cellar in October.

Hart’s show, however, is scheduled only two hours before his party is to begin, which had us wondering how he would even make it on time. A helicopter, perhaps? All jokes aside, for Hart, this makes sense. He is known for his work ethic, and his decision to seize on an opportunity to perform at a great local arts institution shows, on his part, that coming to Connecticut for what seems like a promotional event for Foxwoods, wouldn’t be enough for him.

So wait ’til those who already bought a $45 ticket to his birthday party hear of this. Foxwoods’ vague description of Hart’s party had us wondering what going to such an event would entail — it seems that Hart won’t be doing any sort of performance at the party, so onlookers might be left to watch their star sit across the room drinking champagne. At the very least, based on the party info, everyone will be guaranteed a lot of cake.

DONOVAN celebrates the 50th anniversary of his single “SUNSHINE SUPERMAN” when it reached #1 on The Billboard Charts. The album of the same name is considered a classic masterpiece, described during DONOVAN’s induction into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012: “Donovan single-handedly initiated the Psychedelic Revolution with Sunshine Superman.”
Audiences during the tour will be treated to DONOVAN’s history of hits, including “Sunshine Superman,” “Mellow Yellow,” “The Hurdy Gurdy Man,” “Jenifer Juniper” as well as his legendary storytelling and other cult classic songs.
SONY/LEGACY RECORDINGS will present “The Essential Donovan”–a collection of DONOVAN’s hits and other innovative album selections.
Gibson Guitars has created a special “Donovan Model J45 Guitar,” the guitar on which DONOVAN composed, recorded and performed all his 60s works.
It’s all a long way from that heady 60s decade that birthed him, but 2016 will confirm DONOVAN as much more than a mere heritage act. He embodies the history of British rock and pop. DONOVAN is an institution, and his legacy and influence will ensure that he is part of its future, too.

Kris Kristofferson | Garde Arts Center | May 6th | 8 PM

Heralded as an artist’s artist, Kris Kristofferson has recorded 27 albums and has spent three decades performing concerts all over the world. He achieved remarkable success as a country songwriter at the start of the 1970s. His songs "Me and Bobby McGee," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and "For the Good Times," all chart-topping hits, helped redefine country songwriting. The internationally acclaimed Canadian band, The Musical Box -  the only band officially licensed by Genesis and Peter Gabriel -   known for its near-perfect theatrical recreations of early Genesis' work, is coming to the Garde for the first time  to perform Selling England by the Pound (the Black Show) , the emblematic 1974 performance that made Genesis and Peter Gabriel attain rock star status.  The Musical Box has achieved a cult-like following from nostalgic and young music lovers alike for their concert staging using the same instruments and equipment used by Genesis during the ‘70’s, with exact replicas of Peter Gabriel’s costumes, stage props and slide projections.

Boogie on the Bayou: Mardi Gras Celebration featuring Marcia Ball & The Subdudes 2/23/17

A Texas-born, Louisiana-raised musical storyteller has earned worldwide fame for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she strolls onto the stage. Her groove-laden New Orleans boogie, deeply soulful ballads and rollicking Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music fans all over the world. In 2010, she was inducted into the Gulf Coast Hall Of Fame and in 2012 into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. She’s received a total of six Living Blues Awards and nine Blues Music Awards (and has a whopping 42 nominations). She’s received five Grammy Award nominations, including five of her six previous Alligator albums.

Over the course of 25 years and ten albums, the Subdudes have quietly become one of America’s national music treasures. The New Orleans-formed group is a living encapsulation of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R&B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness — not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear from any five musicians. Led by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist, John Magnie, The Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals; their sound is also notable for the band’s substitution of a tambourine player, Steve Amedée,  for a drummer. Tim Cook rounds out the band on bass.
